# Right & Respectful Relations: A Memoir of the Road to the Historic Yakama Nation Amicus Brief Challenging ‘Christian Discovery’ in Washington State V. Cougar Den

This personal memoir, *Right & Respectful Relations*, chronicles his journey as Chairman of the Yakama Nation Tribal Council and his involvement in the historic amicus brief challenging the Doctrine of Christian Discovery in *Washington State v. Cougar Den*. Drawing on his experience as Chief Operating Officer of King Mountain Tobacco, Goudy reflects on the complexities of asserting Yakama treaty rights under the 1855 Treaty, which guarantees the Nation “exclusive use and benefit” of its lands and unfettered access to public roadways, protected under the U.S. Constitution. The details of the interplay of federal, state, and tribal law, including the challenges posed by historical legal precedent tracing back to *Johnson v. McIntosh*.

Through personal narrative, the authour illustrates the tension between Indigenous sovereignty and imposed legal structures, interweaving lessons from their grandfather about resilience, endurance, and spiritual reflection. The memoir provides an intimate account of the strategic development and filing of the Yakama amicus brief, the confrontation with non-Native legal systems, and the assertion of cultural identity—including ceremonial regalia—before the U.S. Supreme Court.

This article situates these legal and political struggles within the broader context of a 500-year history of colonial domination, emphasizing the need to challenge foundational myths, such as the Doctrine of Christian Discovery. Beyond litigation, the memoir addresses integrity, leadership, and the pursuit of Right and Respectful Relations, illustrating the ongoing work required to achieve Native self-determination, cultural preservation, and equitable systems for future generations.
