# Journal for Cultural and Religious Theory Introduces DOIs

The Journal for Cultural and Religious Theory (JCRT) is pleased to announce that, beginning with our next issue, every article we publish will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). We are also undertaking a retroactive project to assign DOIs to our back catalog, so that the full body of JCRT scholarship becomes persistently citable and discoverable.

The Journal for Cultural and Religious Theory (JCRT) is pleased to announce that, beginning with our next issue, every article we publish will be assigned a Digital Object Identifier (DOI). We are also undertaking a retroactive project to assign DOIs to our back catalog, so that the full body of JCRT scholarship becomes persistently citable and discoverable.

What’s changing

- All future publications will receive a DOI at the time of publication, registered through [Knowledge Commons Works](https://works.hcommons.org/) under the DOI prefix `10.17613`.

- We will retroactively assign DOIs to previously published articles, working back through our archive issue by issue.

- DOI assignment will roll out in phases; we will share updates as batches of legacy articles are completed.

Why this matters

- Persistent, stable links: DOIs resolve to an article regardless of URL or platform changes, ensuring long-term access.

- Improved discoverability: DOIs make JCRT scholarship easier to find, index, and cross-reference in databases, search engines, and citation managers (Zotero, EndNote, etc.).

- Better citation tracking: DOIs allow citation counts and metrics to be tracked accurately across platforms like Google Scholar and Crossref.

- Interoperability: DOIs integrate JCRT articles into the broader scholarly infrastructure, supporting indexing in services that require persistent identifiers.

What authors and readers can expect

- Authors of upcoming articles will receive their DOI as part of the standard publication and notification process; no additional action is required.

- Authors of previously published work will be notified once a DOI has been assigned to their article, and asked to update citations or CVs accordingly.

- Readers can expect to see DOIs listed alongside article metadata on our site and in citation exports.

Timeline

- New articles: DOIs active starting with volume 25, issue 2 (August 2026).

- Legacy articles: rollout beginning August 2026, proceeding by volume and issue.

**Update, August 30, 2026:** the retroactive rollout is complete. All 829 articles in the numbered archive, from volume 1 in 1999 onward, now have DOIs. See [Every Article in the JCRT Archive Now Has a DOI](/blog/2026-08-30-jcrt-archive-doi-complete/).
