This article explores the convergence of quantum physics, neuroscience, and philosophy of religion in understanding consciousness and spiritual experience. Beginning with quantum entanglement and Einstein’s characterization of “spooky action at a distance,” the article traces an analogy to recent discoveries in neuroscience, particularly ephaptic coupling—the non-synaptic, field-based communication between neurons.
Drawing on David Chalmers’ “hard problem” of consciousness and critiquing physicalist reductionism, the article argues that contemporary neuroscience, when properly integrated with theoretical physics and phenomenological philosophy, opens unprecedented avenues for investigating transcendent experiences. The work of Andrew Newberg in neurotheology serves as a bridge between empirical brain imaging and theological inquiry, demonstrating how meditation, prayer, and mystical states correlate with specific patterns of neural activity.
By invoking Kant’s transcendental philosophy and post-structural semiotics, the article proposes a framework for “transcendental semiotics” that moves beyond the immanence/transcendence dichotomy, suggesting that quantum-level information processing and electromagnetic field effects in the brain may provide a scientific basis for understanding religious and spiritual phenomena without resorting to reductionism.
