About JCRT
The Journal for Cultural and Religious Theory (JCRT, ISSN 1530-5228) is a peer-reviewed, open access journal founded in 1999 and devoted to disciplinary and interdisciplinary scholarship that engages religion, culture, and critical theory. JCRT publishes original research and special issues that advance the study of religion in contemporary intellectual, political, and social contexts. The journal is supported by the University of Denver and Syracuse University.
Aims and scope
JCRT publishes scholarship of a cutting-edge nature that deals broadly with the phenomenon of religion in its relation to cultural, philosophical, and political theory. Its subfields include, but are not limited to, philosophical and cultural theory, continental philosophy of religion, theological studies and political theology, postcolonial, decolonial, and globalization theory, religious studies, literary theory, cultural studies, ethnic, area, and gender studies, communications, semiotics, and linguistics. The journal’s readership is researchers, teachers, and graduate students in religious studies, theology, philosophy, and the theoretical humanities and social sciences.
JCRT considers original research articles, invited and proposed special issues, and, in its Religious Theory feature, shorter essays, commentary, conversations, and book reviews. It does not consider term papers, religious advocacy, unsolicited book reviews, or opinion pieces, and it does not publish work that has been published elsewhere or is under consideration by another journal. Research articles undergo double-anonymous peer review. Details for authors are on the Submissions page.
Publishing schedule
JCRT publishes two to three issues a year, in an online-only format, and has done so continuously since 1999. Each article is published as an individual, paginated PDF with its own web page and DOI. The full archive from Volume 1 (1999) onward is available at Journal Archive.
About Religious Theory
Religious Theory is a feature of JCRT that provides timely essays, commentary, and conversations. Articles accepted for Religious Theory may be published later in a regular JCRT issue as a paginated PDF with library cataloguing information. The minimum time between publication in Religious Theory and JCRT is 12 months; the maximum is 30 months.
In addition to articles, Religious Theory publishes reviews of current books and titles. Reviews are not republished in PDF format. We welcome reviewers; if you are interested in reviewing a book on the “books for review” page, or a title you want to propose, please contact the Book Review Editor. If the title is appropriate, we will request it from the publisher.

JCRT and Religious Theory are owned and published, under its Whitestone Publications imprint, by The Whitestone Foundation, a 501©(3) non-profit corporation registered in and operating from the state of Colorado, United States. The Journal for Cultural and Religious Theory is a registered trade name of the Foundation. The journal is run by its editorial board; the Senior Editor is responsible for the content of the journal. Other Whitestone publications include The New Polis, The New Polis Journal, Esthesis, and our newest member Wild Globalization.
